Our cruise is all inclusive right? - The short answer is not really. While your cabin, food, and water/tea/coffee are included wifi, upgraded dining, shore excursions, and ship board activities are often extra.

How many times have you found what seemed to be an amazing cruise deal—gone through all the steps, picked your dream itinerary, and could practically feel the ocean breeze—only to discover that the actual cost is way higher than you thought?

Suddenly, port fees, gratuities, and drink packages start stacking up. That all-inclusive feeling you were expecting? Not so all-inclusive after all. It’s frustrating, and honestly, it takes some of the fun out of planning.

The good news is that you don’t have to get caught off guard. With a little planning (and some insider knowledge), you can avoid these hidden fees and stay on budget, without sacrificing the cruise experience you’ve been dreaming of. Let’s break down where these costs sneak in and how to outsmart them.

1. Port Fees and Taxes

Cruise fares often seem like a steal until port fees and taxes are added. These mandatory charges vary based on the itinerary and ports visited. They can add hundreds of dollars to the base fare.

How to Avoid It:

  • When comparing cruise prices, make sure you're looking at the final price with taxes and fees included—not just the advertised base fare.

  • Work with a Picture Perfect Adventures Travel Advisor today to get a full price breakdown and all port fees and taxes included

2. Gratuities and Service Charges

Most cruise lines automatically add daily gratuities to your onboard account, usually around $16–$20 per person per day. This can total $200+ per couple on a 7-night cruise.

How to Avoid It:

  • Some cruise lines allow you to prepay gratuities before your trip, so there are no surprises at checkout.

  • Consider all-inclusive cruise lines, which include gratuities in the fare.

Pro Tip: Virgin Voyages is an adults only cruise line that includes gratuities in the price. Check out the pictures from my clients recent voyage.

3. Specialty Dining and Beverages

While main dining rooms and buffets are included, specialty restaurants and drinks can cost extra. A single dinner at a steakhouse may run $50+ per person, and cocktails often exceed $12 each.

How to Avoid It:

  • Look for drink and dining packages—these can save money if you plan to indulge.

  • Some cruise lines offer free specialty dining credits as part of promotions.

Pro-Tip: When booking Alaska, Holland America Cruise Line offers a early-booking bonus that includes 1 specialty dining and the drink package. Contact us today to take advantage of early pricing and bonus offers.

4. Wi-Fi and Communication Costs

Internet at sea is notoriously expensive, with packages often costing $15–$30 per day. Many travelers don’t realize this until they try to log in onboard.

How to Avoid It:

  • Take advantage of free Wi-Fi at ports or look for ships that offer complimentary basic Wi-Fi.

  • Some loyalty programs provide free internet minutes for returning cruisers.

5. Shore Excursions

Cruise-line-sponsored excursions can be pricey, often costing $100+ per person for basic tours. Private excursions may be more affordable and offer a more customized experience.

How to Avoid It:

  • Book excursions independently or explore ports on your own.

  • Some cruise lines offer shore excursion credits or discounts for early booking.

On Regent Seven Seas Cruise, I had the oppotunity to participate in a cooking class about corn and the importance of it to Meixco and the Mayan Community. It is one of my favorite shore excursions till this day.

6. Onboard Activities and Entertainment

Some onboard experiences like escape rooms, fitness classes, or premium shows come with extra charges.

How to Avoid It:

  • Stick to the free entertainment options, like Broadway-style shows, trivia, and live music.

  • Some cruise lines include more complimentary activities than others. Our Advisors cruise year round and can help you find the cruise line that right for you. Activities are important when it comes to picking the right cruise for you and your family or friends.

7. Spa and Wellness Fees

While cruise ship spas offer incredible treatments, they’re often more expensive than on land. Even access to the thermal suites or saunas may cost extra.

How to Avoid It:

  • Look for spa specials on port days, when demand is lower.

  • Consider booking treatments before sailing, as some cruise lines offer discounts for pre-booked services.

8. Transportation and Transfers

Getting to and from the cruise terminal isn’t included in your fare. Taxis, ride-shares, and shuttle services can add unexpected expenses.

How to Avoid It:

  • Book transfers in advance or choose a cruise line that includes airport pickup.

  • If driving, research cruise parking fees, as they can add up quickly.

  • Look at Lyft or Uber as an option, often they are cheaper than cruise line transfers.

Plan Smart, Cruise Smarter

Cruising should be about relaxation, adventure, and making unforgettable memories—not stressing over unexpected charges. By knowing where hidden fees tend to sneak in and planning ahead, you can stay on budget and still enjoy all the perks of your dream cruise. The key is understanding what’s included, where to save, and when it’s worth splurging.
