7 Places to Avoid in 2025 and Where to go Instead

Amber Robinson

Traveling is one of life’s greatest joys, offering opportunities for adventure, cultural immersion, and unforgettable memories. However, not all destinations live up to their hype. Whether due to overcrowding, environmental concerns, safety issues, or overrated attractions, some places are better left off your bucket list. Here’s a look at seven travel destinations you might want to reconsider and the reasons why.

1. Venice, Italy

Why Avoid It: Over tourism and environmental strain

Venice’s picturesque canals and historic charm draw millions of tourists annually, but this popularity comes at a cost. The city’s narrow streets are often packed, making it difficult to enjoy the scenery without battling crowds. The city's new day-visitor quota system means you'll pay up to €50 just to enter.  Additionally, the influx of tourists has strained the local infrastructure and contributed to the erosion of its fragile environment.

Where to go Instead: Explore lesser-known Italian gems like Verona or Bologna.

2. Machu Picchu, Peru

Why Avoid It: Environmental degradation and over-tourism

While the ancient Incan citadel is breathtaking, its popularity has led to significant environmental concerns. The Peruvian government has imposed restrictions to limit daily visitors, but the sheer volume of tourists continues to threaten its preservation. For a less crowded alternative, explore Peru’s Choquequirao ruins, often referred to as the "sister city" of Machu Picchu.

Instead think about: Colombia's Lost City (Ciudad Perdida) or Bolivia's Tiwanaku for their remarkable ancient ruins without the crowds.

3. Bali, Indonesia

Why Avoid It: Overcrowding and loss of authenticity

Bali’s reputation as a tropical paradise has made it a victim of its own success. Overcrowding in popular areas like Kuta and Seminyak has diminished the island’s charm, while excessive tourism has strained local resources and infrastructure.

Instead think about: To experience Indonesia’s beauty without the chaos, try visiting Lombok or the Komodo Islands.

4. Maya Bay, Thailand

Why Avoid It: Environmental recovery struggles

Despite reopening promises, this "Beach" movie location continues to struggle with environmental recovery. Limited daily visitors, restricted swimming areas, and ongoing restoration work mean you're paying premium prices for a compromised experience.

Instead: Visit El Nido, Philippines for pristine beaches and similar limestone cliffs without the crowds.

5. Barcelona’s Las Ramblas District, Spain

Why Avoid It: Anti-tourism sentiment and loss of authenticity

Local anti-tourism sentiment has peaked, with frequent protests and new restrictions. Many authentic shops have been replaced by tourist traps, and pickpocketing incidents have increased dramatically. The area has lost much of its original charm while gaining inflated prices.

Instead: Visit Valencia for equally stunning architecture, better beaches, and authentic Spanish culture without the tourist fatigue.

6. Santorini, Greece

Why Avoid It: Over-tourism and high costs

Santorini’s iconic white-washed buildings and caldera views are undeniably beautiful, but the island’s popularity has made it overcrowded and expensive. Cruise ships bring thousands of tourists daily, overwhelming the small island.

Instead Try: The islands of Milos or Folegandros.

Coast of Milos Greece

7. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Why Avoid It: Overcrowding and loss of authenticity

Dubrovnik’s stunning Old Town, featured prominently in popular media, has become a victim of its own fame. Cruise ships and day-trippers overwhelm the city’s narrow streets, and many of its authentic establishments have been replaced by tourist-centric businesses. The high influx of visitors often detracts from the city’s historic charm.

Instead Try: Rovinj, a picturesque coastal town in Croatia with a more relaxed atmosphere, stunning views, and authentic local culture.

Travel is about more than just ticking destinations off a list; it’s about meaningful experiences and responsible exploration. By avoiding these overburdened or problematic locations, you can reduce your impact and discover hidden gems that offer just as much beauty and adventure. When planning your next trip, consider destinations that align with sustainable and ethical travel practices. After all, the world is full of incredible places waiting to be explored!
