Small Ship vs. Large Ship: The Pros and Cons

Amber Robinson

Every week I have someone ask how do I choose the right cruise for my family or group? Due to recently trying true small ship cruising and having been on large ships before as well, I can confidently say there is a perfect size for everyone. When you think about your next cruise, what do you envision? Is it an intimate dinner overlooking a quiet cove in the Mediterranean, or a vibrant night dancing under the stars with hundreds of fellow travelers? The type of ship you choose—small or large—can completely shape your cruising experience, from the destinations you reach to the atmosphere onboard.

Comparing ships
The size difference is noticeable.

For some, small ships are a hidden gem, offering exclusive access to less crowded ports and a personalized touch. For others, large ships are the ultimate getaway, packed with activities, dining options, and entertainment for the whole family.

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. This guide will break down the pros and cons of each type of cruise, helping you decide which vessel is the perfect match for your travel style and priorities.

I love both small and large cruise ships, but each type has its own charm. When on a small ship I love stopping to work puzzles, getting to participate in different teas, and getting to know people in through the games. However, one that I did fall in love with on Regent was the laundry service. The magic of leaving the bag outside your stateroom and then coming back to fresh clean laundry the next day - well there was nothing like it. When it comes to large ships there is always something to do and you are never bored. I love the atmosphere of the events and parties, the different neighborhoods of the ship like the Boardwalk or Central Park.

Small Ships: Personalized and Intimate

Pros:

  1. Exclusive Destinations: Small ships can navigate to lesser-known ports and remote destinations inaccessible to larger vessels. Think secluded Caribbean islands, hidden Mediterranean gems, or the Arctic’s untouched shores.

  2. Intimate Atmosphere: With fewer passengers, small ships foster a more personal experience. You’re more likely to get to know your fellow travelers and enjoy attentive service from the crew.

  3. Specialized Activities: Small ships often focus on niche interests, such as wildlife expeditions, cultural immersions, or luxury culinary experiences.

  4. Quick Embarkation and Debarkation: Smaller passenger counts mean less waiting in lines to board or disembark, making your travel more seamless.

Cons:

  • Limited Onboard Amenities: You won’t find the sprawling water parks, Broadway-style shows, or extensive dining options typical of larger ships.

  • Higher Costs: Small ships tend to offer more exclusive experiences, often reflected in a higher price tag.

  • Potential for Motion Sensitivity: Smaller vessels are more susceptible to ocean swells, which might be less comfortable for those prone to seasickness.

Large Ships: Bigger, Bolder, and Full of Entertainment

Pros:

  1. Extensive Amenities: Large ships boast a wealth of options, including multiple pools, specialty restaurants, shopping malls, theaters, and even zip lines or ice skating rinks.

  2. Variety of Activities: From family-friendly attractions to adults-only lounges, large ships cater to a wide range of interests, making them perfect for multi-generational groups.

  3. Value for Money: Larger ships can accommodate more passengers, often translating into more affordable pricing per person.

  4. Broad Itinerary Choices: Large ships visit popular ports worldwide and often offer more frequent sailings.

Cons:

  • Crowds: The sheer number of passengers can lead to longer lines, busier dining venues, and a less personal experience.

  • Restricted Port Access: Large ships are limited to major ports with infrastructure to support their size, potentially missing smaller, charming destinations.

  • Longer Embarkation Times: Boarding and disembarking may take longer due to the volume of passengers.

Which Cruise is Right for You?

Choose a Small Ship If You:

  • Crave intimate, immersive experiences.

  • Want to visit off-the-beaten-path destinations.

  • Prefer a relaxed, quiet atmosphere with a focus on personalized service.

Choose a Large Ship If You:

  • Enjoy abundant activities and entertainment options.

  • Are traveling with a diverse group of people with varying interests.

  • Appreciate budget-friendly travel with plenty of onboard perks.

Your Perfect Cruise Awaits

Selecting the right ship is key to crafting a cruise vacation you’ll treasure. Whether you’re drawn to the intimate charm of a small ship or the exciting amenities of a large one, the choice ultimately depends on your priorities, travel style, and the kind of adventure you envision.

One of my favorite ship experiences recently was a shore excursion where I participated in a cooking class and learned about Mexico, the Mayan Heritage, and how important corn was to their country and history. The experience of making my own tortillas, salsa (which I now make all the time), and learning other tips and tricks is one I think often.
