7 Common Myths about using a Travel Advisor
Travel Advisor: More Valuable Than Ever
In today's digital world, it's easy to think travel agents/advisors are a thing of the past. After all, with so many booking sites at your fingertips, why would you need one? The truth is, travel agents/advisors aren't just still around—we're thriving, and for good reason. Let’s clear up some myths and talk about why working with a travel advisor can make all the difference in your travel experience.

Common Myths About Travel Agents
1. Travel Advisors Always Try to Make You Spend More: A friend of mine once told me she thought travel advisors always push people to spend more money so they can earn a bigger commission.
Myth: Travel advisors only care about making money and will always try to upsell you beyond your budget.
Truth: False. Big fat lie. Total misunderstanding.
Here’s how we actually work:
Qualified and certified professionals like myself often charge a one-time plan-to-go fee (just like when you see an attorney or tax specialist). For that one fee, we handle all the planning, research, verifications, and bookings. We then compile all the details into one set of easy-to-follow travel documents.
We ALWAYS work within your budget. If your budget is $3000 or $10,000, as long as you communicate with us; we will present flight and accommodation/cruise options that fit within your budget. At the end of the day, our goal is ALWAYS help you book the an amazing vacation—without pressuring you to spend more than you're comfortable with.

2. I Can Find Better Deals Online
A lot of people assume that booking directly online always leads to the best deals.
Myth: Travel agents/advisors can’t beat online prices, and booking yourself is always cheaper.
Truth: Not necessarily! What you see online is not always what you get!
Here's how we actually work:
Have you ever arrived at a hotel to find that your room is nothing like what you thought you had booked? It happens more often than you know. When you check into a hotel you have expectations about the room design, space, cleanliness, and of course the room amenities. You also probably have specific ideas about what breakfast, parking, the gym, room service, or lobby cafe will be like- however there are so many room categories now its like navigating the Ikea Store.
As travel advisors, we are experts at navigating the complexities of booking hotel rooms and knowing what to look for in the clever marketing speak that hotels throw out there like “partial sea view”. Nobody loves a partial sea view standing on the toilet and covering your left eye to catch a “glimpse”. Not only will we make sure you don’t end up at the wrong hotel, in the wrong room, or in the middle of constructions or closures, but sometimes we even have access (that you can’t get) to upgrades, perks, and amenities.
3. Travel Agents Just Book Flights and Hotels
Some believe that travel agents only handle the basics of travel planning.
Myth: Travel advisors only help with booking flights and hotels, nothing more.
Truth: We do SO much more! As full-service consultants, we craft complete travel experiences, including private tours, adventure excursions, dining reservations, special access to attractions, and even personalized experiences like cooking classes or wildlife encounters. Whatever your dream trip looks like, we make it happen.
We know about new and rare experiences
That feeling of wanting to go on vacation, of needing a vacation. You know it right?
When you’re so fed up with the monotony of day-to-day life that you just need a break?
The first decision you need to make is when to go and then the second decision is where to go.

Let me ask you a question though… have you considered letting a professional travel advisor give you a shortlist of destination ideas? Perhaps somewhere that you’ve heard of but never been to or maybe a totally new destination full of new experiences.
As professional travel advisors, we hear about new destinations and experiences before they go to market - that new overwater bungalow hotel in the Caribbean? The new all-suite hotel with Eiffel Tower views and private balconies? Or maybe that new state-of-the-art river cruise ship in Egypt sailing on the Nile River.
4. Only Luxury Travelers Use Travel Advisors
Some think that travel agents only work with clients who have unlimited budgets.
Myth: Travel advisors are only for luxury travelers who spend thousands on extravagant vacations.
Truth: Absolutely not! We work with all budgets. Whether you're planning a cost-conscious family vacation or an indulgent honeymoon, we tailor itineraries to fit your needs, priorities, and financial comfort zone. No budget is too small to benefit from professional planning.

5. Travel Advisors Are Outdated
With technology making it easy to book online, some assume agents are obsolete.
Myth: Travel advisors are a thing of the past, replaced by apps and websites.
Truth: While we embrace technology, travel agents bring something that automated booking systems never can—human expertise. We use cutting-edge booking tools and stay on top of industry trends, but we also provide a level of personalization and problem-solving that no website or app can match.
There are a lot of moving parts
The average 7 day vacation to Europe or the Caribbean has up to 25 separate bookings in it.
Accommodation (maybe 1-3 properties)
Flights (perhaps a few booked separately with different airlines (for better value and logistics)
Airport transfers to and from your home, accommodation, and the airport (between 2 and 6 of these)
Travel insurance to match exactly what you booked
Transfers to and from hotels, trains, airports, and even excursions
A few day trips or excursions with the same or different tour companies
Museum, gallery, or social attraction tickets to avoid waiting in line
Car rental
Did you know that each of these separate bookings (usually through different companies) comes with its own rules and fine print? They can be incredibly complex to stitch together into one itinerary.
Take a flight layover for example. Did you know that different airports around the world have “legal connection times”, a minimum amount of time required to connect two flights together? Why on earth would you put yourself through the stress of researching and planning all of these bookings when you can rely on a professional travel advisor (like the team members at Picture Perfect Adventures) to do it for you for one low planning fee (not all advisors charge).
6. I'll Lose Control of My Travel Plans
Some fear that using a travel agent means they won’t have control over their trip.
Myth: Working with a travel advisor means giving up control of my vacation plans.
Truth: Nope! Think of us as your travel partners. We work with you, incorporating your preferences and must-haves while offering expert recommendations to enhance your trip. You get the final say on every detail—we just make it easier to navigate the options.
7. Booking Online Is More Convenient
Some believe that doing it themselves saves time and effort.
Myth: Booking my own travel online is faster and easier than using an agent.
Truth: At first, it might seem quick, but sorting through endless options can be overwhelming and time-consuming. A travel advisor does the heavy lifting, saving you hours of research and ensuring all details are handled seamlessly. Plus, we’re here to troubleshoot if anything goes wrong.
The Bottom Line
In a world full of endless travel options, working with a travel agent brings back what booking sites lack: a personal connection, real expertise, and the assurance that someone is looking out for you. Travel should be exciting, not stressful. So why go it alone when you can have a professional in your corner?
Whether it’s a quick weekend escape or a bucket-list adventure, let’s make your next trip unforgettable. You deserve a travel experience that’s not just booked but truly designed for you!
